概要 Sociolinguistics is concerned with language as it relates to the culture or society in which it is used. When we speak, we make choices that indicate our identity. The relationship between language and culture is about the inter-relationship between one's world view and the linguistic traditions in which one has been raised. To learn a second language is to learn a second culture; it is impossible to separate the two concepts without losing the significance of either. Language and identity are interrelated insofar as it is impossible to speak without indicating who you are or what position you occupy within the particular communicative context. Variation in the way people choose to use language in a variety of circumstances is related to who they see themselves to be, and in this way, we can see the importance of second language learning and intercultural communication.
