概要 The main objectives of this study were to assess: 1) the beliefs about second language learning that Japanese students most commonly hold; 2) the relationship among students’ approach to the study of the second language, their critical thinking and their metacognitive skills; and 3) to find out how much of the variation in academic performance can be explained by students’ beliefs, their critical thinking and by their metacognitive skills.

The results showed that the beliefs that students hold are systematically organized and that they can be categorized into two distinct approaches to second language learning (viz., a traditional and a communicative approach). In addition, the results showed that while students’ critical thinking is positively correlated with their beliefs supporting a communicative approach, it is negatively correlated with their beliefs supporting a traditional approach to the study of the language.

Concerning students’ metacognitive skills, the results showed that they positively correlate with students’ critical thinking and their beliefs supporting a communicative approach to the study of Portuguese, whereas no correlation was observed with beliefs supporting a traditional approach to the study of the language.

Finally, the results also revealed that students’ academic performance positively correlates with their critical thinking and metacognitive skills and with beliefs supporting a communicative approach, whereas a negative correlation was observed with beliefs supporting a traditional approach to the study of the language.
