Details The main objectives of this study were to assess: 1) the beliefs about second language learning that Japanese students most commonly hold; 2) the relationship among students’ approach to the study of the second language, their critical thinking and their metacognitive skills; and 3) to find out how much of the variation in academic performance can be explained by students’ beliefs, their critical thinking and by their metacognitive skills.
