概要 Kyoto University of Foreign Studies initiated a new course of language education in the fall of 2003. It is called Bi-language Simultaneous Learning, abbreviated as BSL. Students learn two foreign languages at the same time in the course. The course is conducted by two teachers, one for English and the other for another foreign language, a team teaching. The course of BSL which deals with English and French, for example, is affixed as BSL-EF, which means Bi-language Simultaneous Learning: English and French. The class consists of the students who mainly learn English and French as a second foreign language and those who mainly learn French and English as a second foreign language. Students have to have finished at least the basic courses of French. The main teaching material indispensable to the course is movies. The contrastive linguistics approach and the comparative culture approaches are employed to let the students obtain clear understanding of the differences, commonalities, and similarities with respect to pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, meaning, and expressions. The course is attended by native speakers of English and French as class assistants, who are exchange students from the U.S., England, Ireland, Australia, Canada, and Paris. The teachers intentionally bring up a lot of questions about language and culture to the native speakers, and they answer and talk in their native languages. This unique and original course was selected as a Good Practice Program (GP), Support Program for Distinctive University Education, in 2006 by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology in Japan.
