| 概要 | This essay explains the historical development of Japan-U.S. security relations from the Cold War to the post-Cold War era, focusing on the establishment and revisions of the “Guidelines for Japan-U.S. Defense Cooperation” (commonly known as the “Guidelines”). It does so by drawing on prior major research and findings on this subject. In particular, the specific content of the Guidelines within the context of the evolving international environment behind their formulation and revisions is analyzed in detail. Moreover, the latter part of this paper examines how the transformation in the nature of Japan-U.S. defense cooperation has impacted the identity of postwar Japan as a “peace-loving nation” through the use of recent public opinion survey results. |
