概要	This study had two objectives. First, international graduate students at Kyoto University collaborated with students from Moriyama High School in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, to survey local residents regarding their knowledge, attitudes and behaviors related to the conservation of Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake. A secondary aim was to engage in collaborative learning, with graduate students teaching the high school students how to conduct social science research, the high school students helping to create and conduct surveys and focus groups, and both sides attempting to transcend language, cultural and logistical barriers. The survey data suggested that residents have high levels of awareness and motivation for conserving Lake Biwa, even though only a minority were exposed to formal environmental education.
