概要	This report briefly considers the place of foreign language learning in Japan from a historical perspective and how it is evolving to meet the needs of learners in modern times. Whether interacting with foreign people in daily life while studying abroad or during the performance of duties as company employees, more young Japanese than ever before have good reason to develop heightened sensitivity about cultural differences and the awareness to communicate appropriately depending on the situation they are in. Teachers need to approach their lessons in a way that sometimes encourages students to question their assumptions and cultural stereotypes, and to think critically in order to adapt to the complexities of the world.
