| 概要 | This study examines an out-of-class vocabulary activity designed to promote learner autonomy among Japanese university EFL students. Inspired by the traditional practice of shakyo, learners used shared online spreadsheets to build personalized vocabulary databases from subtitled movies or other audiovisual materials. The shared format enabled peer visibility, encouraging incidental peer learning and a sense of community. The activity was first implemented in a translation course and later adapted for an exam preparation course. Post-course surveys in both courses indicated generally positive attitudes, especially toward the freedom to choose vocabulary and the usefulness of the spreadsheets. Although engagement was higher in the translation course, the activity was well received overall, suggesting that learner-driven, technology-mediated tasks can support autonomy and contextualized vocabulary learning. |
