概要	Foreign English language teachers employed at Japanese universities commonly complain about the passivity of their students. However, do teachers plan lessons with a full understanding of students' past experiences? University classes based on communicative language teaching philosophy tend to be very different from what students have previously experienced, so it ought to be expected that some of them will have problems adapting immediately. This paper explores some ways to help students acclimatise to their new situation and gradually introduce them to the ideas that underpin the teacher’s methodology.
