概要	Literature circles are regarded as being a useful tool for instructors in the EFL classroom. One key element of reading circles is the assignment of a specific role for each student. The current study includes participants assigned to one of four roles in a literature circle: summarizer, discussion leader, word master, and connector. The participants include twenty-five first-year and second-year students at a Japanese university. The goal of the study is to measure whether the participants have increases in English proficiency and confidence based on survey data. Furthermore, qualitative data incorporates the participant comments about the discussions and participation in literature circles. Ultimately, the current study re-evaluates the effectiveness of a commonly used teaching tool based on student perceptions, supported by survey responses.
