Details	the hell out of構文に生起するthe hellの語彙的意味を通事的観点から明らかにし、本来はthe daylights out of NPというように結果構文の一種として「正気を失う」という意味で使用されていたが、the daylightsの語彙的意味が希薄化することでthe Nの場所に様々な罵り語が代入するようになる過程を明らかにした。また、日本語の「〜ほど」という表現と比較し、強調の要素であるextent素性が日英語では異なる場所に入り込むことから、誇張表現を導出する過程が異なる点を論じた。
