Details Benedetto Croce wrote several articles about his contemporary Gabriele D’Annunzio as a poet, the most important of which were Gabriele D’Annunzio (1903) and L’ultimo D’Annunzio (1935). Croce’s first important philosophical work Estetica come scienza dell’espressione e linguistica generale was published in 1902 and his definitive aesthetics book La poesia came out in 1935, and that would justify an attempt to analyze the development of Croce’s aesthetics as typified in these two articles on D’Annunzio. If we read these two critical works without knowing their historical context in detail, Croce would seem to have changed his mind about the poet drastically, and this is how they have been read and interpreted by some scholars. However, the quite peculiar background circumstances in which Croce wrote Gabriele D’Annunzio must be kept in mind: this is the background the author looks into as a basis for reconsidering how Croce’s judgments on D’Annunzio developed over time.
