Details | This paper discusses the possibility of applying a monosemous approach to the analysis of may and can. The modals' structure has the same unitary semantic content with two different modal interpretations: subjectivity and objectivity. Based on the subjective and objective modalities, the author provides reasonable explanations for the difference between may and can. |
