Details | This paper explores the age-old dilemma of language teachers: encouraging communicative competence. Beginning with common stereotypes of language teaching, we look at commonly successful techniques for fostering the development of legitimate listening and speaking skills. These include the incorporation of "real" texts, situations, and listening materials in the classroom, reduction of affective filters to communication, the relationship between semantics and pragmatics, and the importance of cultural as well as linguistic fluency. |
