Title | Changing Tradition in Contemporary Japan:- New Directions for Taiko, the Japanese Drum (Masters Thesis University of Essex) |

Details | Treating traditional percussion as social text, this paper looks at the new place for taiko in Japan through 3 case studies: a professional group, an amateur group, and a drum manufacturer. Their origins and development, activities, and philosophies are analysed. The case studies’ are found to be uniquely Japanese but also display traits of modern global citizens, manifesting zeal for their own traditions in the face of the loss of local and individual identity under globalization. |
