Details | Many ‘Western’ songs have been assimilated by Japan since the late 19th century. This paper gives a history of Western music in Japan, followed by 2 case studies ¬ 3 Japanese versions each of ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ and ‘My Grandfather’s Clock’. Japanese and Western interpretations are compared. Finds evidence of active lyrical processes, as historically observed in oral tradition, along with cultural processes reflecting current social and political dialectics. The common song repertoire is found to address social issues at local and global scales, and thus to question entrenched ideologies behind conventional ideas of cultural identity. |
