Details | Through content analysis of lyrics, themes of whaling practice are identified in 50 traditional Japanese folk songs from nine prefectures. It is found that the songs outline Edo-period whaling in terms of geography, personnel, techniques, and whale types. Further analysis finds these songs to be prospective, based on idealized visions of whaling practice, aimed principally at affirming social and spiritual consensus before and after whaling. This overt function contrasts with the more narrative songs associated with historical British and American whaling. |
