Details This paper aims to identify cultural attitudes in the traditional whaling folk-songs of Japan. Through content analysis of 50 songs from nine prefectures it is found that the songs provide insight into social, folkloric and spiritual attitudes of traditional Japanese whaling. These attitudes include veneration of whales and symbolic invocation whales and deities. Further analysis suggests that these songs are local affirmations of a wider social, folkloric and spiritual consensus. In these respects they differ from the more narrative songs and sea shanties associated with historical British and American whaling.
