概要 This article sets out to explain the context and many of the specific elements that went into the earliest planning and development of Kyoto Gaidai Nishi High School’s Course of International and Cultural Studies (IC )(国際文化コース), which was established in April of 1989. The course was designed and implemented as the first partial late-immersion program in a Japanese high school in Japan. Our initial content-based unit syllabii and curricula are explained, as is the development and use of symposiums, guest speakers, field trips, most centrally, our required study abroad program in high schools in the United States, to motivate and supplement our educational goals. The initiation of our International Exchange Department and Center for Japanese Studies are also introduced, particularly with respects to how these new departments support and dovetail with the educational and social-environmental needs of our Japanese IC students.
