概要 The dynamic economic, social and spiritual relationship of the sacred complex of Mount Omine, Yoshino, Nara, with its deep thousand-year history and lore, and the mountain village of Dorogawa-ku, Tenkawamura, which runs along the valley located at the mountain’s base is introduced in this article. Mt. Omine developed as a center of Sangakushuukyoo (a loose system of mountain religious beliefs and practices), Shugendo, which may be understood as “the way of ascetic practices” often practiced in rugged mountains, and as a sacred destination of religious pilgrims of various traditions. Believers worship in these mountains to gain magical benefits, and, in turn, they influence the evolution of the mountain community of Dorogawa. The nature of social change and plasticity of social systems is the underlying theme of this piece including the sacralization of geography and the transmission and manipulation of tradition.
