Details This essay traces the history of development assistance after World War II as promoted by a variety of actors, including the United States, international organizations such as the World Bank, the United Nations and its specialized agencies. In doing so, the essay posits "development" and "modernization" as the two pillar concepts of development assistance, and examines the way in which they have been modified to fit the changing political, cultural and social milieu of each period during the past seventy years.
