Details Tracks the process of a Japanese neo-cryptid (new monster) emerging on the Internet and being subsequently picked up, spread and embellished by other media and outside Japan. Findings link the monster to Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean, and demonstrate how contemporary (Japanese) art, music, oral literature and other creative cultural products serve as conduits and platforms for political expression, identity construction and the dissemination of gossip and folklore.
