Details | In Zen Buddhism can be found some texts which describe the practices for the awakening as a 'graduate process'. Two well-known examples are the Ten Oxherding Pictures and the Five Ranks of Dongshan. This paper illustrated the meaning of the two texts from the viewpoint of the contemporary understanding. It also tried to clarify the reason why they must be seen as a whole without ranks, though they appear like gradual processes. |
