Details | This paper aims to evaluate the communicative teaching of listening at a conversation school in Japan by focusing on how appropriate the materials, practices and objectives are. Much of the paper focuses on the contrast that exists between the communicative approach and the style of teaching English that can still prevail in Japanese secondary and tertiary levels of education. As a result the paper claims that for communicative teaching to be effective, materials and practices should account more for the cultural and educational backgrounds of Japanese students which are often left at a disadvantage if compared to most of their European and South American counter-parts. |
