| Details | Gómez de Avellaneda, a leading female dramatist of Hispanic American Romanticism, presents in her 1852 debut play La hija de las flores a heroine who defies fate to pursue her goals. However, audiences and critics argued that Flora’s excessive innocence made her unrealistic. This paper aims to uncover why the playwright created such an “overly naive” heroine as a vehicle for expressing her radical ideas, through analysis of letters to her lover Cepeda (1839–1854) and of other characters. |
