Details	Francisca Navarro, a little-known Spanish writer and actress, published at least eleven original plays during the Ominous Decade (1823–1833), a period marked by political instability, censorship, and economic crisis. This article analyzes two of her metatheatrical comedies, El ajuste de la bolera o Una intriga en el teatro and Mi retrato y el de mi compadre (1829), both set in the theatrical world. Based on multiple readings and the identification of metatheatrical elements, the study examines the state of dramaturgy at the time, with particular attention to criticism of the theatrical profession and gender discrimination. The analysis shows how Navarro portrays the precariousness of Spanish theatre, economic tensions, and contemporary aesthetic debates, highlighting the position of women within the professional theatrical sphere.
