| Details | This paper examines current developments in contrastive rhetoric and considers their relevance to academic writing in ESL courses at Japanese universities. It provides background for a study investigating similarities and differences in the rhetorical structures of first language (L1) and second language (L2) writing produced by first-year university students in Kyoto. The paper concludes that although many students struggle to write academic texts, the writing required in other university courses shares many features with English academic writing, suggesting that instruction can build on students’ prior rhetorical experience. |
