Details This pilot study examines how learners’ L2 vocabulary knowledge influences the lexical diversity of texts produced through three modes of academic production. First-year students (n = 17) were assessed using the updated Vocabulary Levels Test (uVLT; Webb, Sasao & Ballance, 2017) and their lexical diversity was analyzed in academic writing, presentations, and discussions. The findings showed that even learners with high uVLT scores tended not to use low-frequency vocabulary in academic writing and presentations, suggesting limits in productive lexical range despite receptive knowledge.
