概要	This presentation focuses on the preliminary results of a study that examines the effects of Extensive Reading (ER) on the reading speed and reading comprehension of English texts among first- and second-year students of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at a Japanese university over the course of one semester. Students are compared on the basis of the number of words that they have read from independently-selected graded readers and their results on pre- and post-reading tests. This is an ongoing study that is expected to support previous research that has found a positive effect of ER on reading speed and comprehension. This presentation will also consider the pedagogical and practical reasons for including reading rate improvement as a goal in the EFL classroom, with a particular focus on how reading rate gains affect comprehension. In addition, the presenters will discuss materials and techniques for guiding students to improve their reading rates and comprehension through ER.
