概要 | Schools and educational programs in Asia, as elsewhere, face many challenges in the
21st century. While the system remains resistant to change, it is obvious that during this era of social, political, and technological upheaval the desired direction of the change addresses curricula and methodologies towards ever-greater social and emotional engagement, autonomy, empowerment, and egalitarianism. The monolithic grammar of schooling permits only superficial and often short-term reforms. For meaningful progress toward the dreams of practitioners and researchers alike, the organizational system of the school itself must be confronted. A bold and innovative program at a private high school in Japan has shown promising results. Called the House Program, it is no short-term intervention but a weekly class and a formal part of the English curriculum. In the program, which is loosely based on the social-athletic houses found in Anglophone countries, students from all three high school grades are mixed and do bilingual collaborative tasks that are planned and implemented by the students themselves. This paper will demonstrate how such a hybrid social-academisocial-academica new path forward for student agency, social and emotional learning, and true curricular reform. |
