概要	The narrator in Herman Melville's "I and My Chimney" retrieves his manhood and fatherhood toward the end of this story by becoming a house-bound recluse keeping guard over his chimney. Although some critics say his attitude is that of a weak old father, the narrator remains optimistic and authoritative in stressing the ownership of his property. He keeps a silent psychological distance from his wife and controls his passions. This presentation emphasizes how the narrator seeks to exercise wordless authority over his family, but his wife and Melville's readers often misunderstand the narrator's silence. This presentation defines the ideas and benchmarks of manhood prevalent in Melville's time and describe how men in general succeeded or failed to achieve its ideal, and how Melville's critics and readers misinterpret the narrator's silent recluse.
