概要 | This special symposium was concerned with teaching English communication techniques and highlighting relevant issues using as a departure point the 2017 movie "The Post", directed by Steven Speilberg and starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks. In particular, we focused on communicative strategies involving implicature, nuance, and non-verbal communication. In a film this far-reaching, we had a wide variety of highly relevant issues from which to choose, and our intention was to examine both historical and cultural parallels between the 50-year-old story in the film and the present day. Gender roles and stereotypes, as well as the role of the press, are issues that stand out as both timeless and timely. From a linguistic perspective, this film offers numerous examples of characters both hedging and asserting their opinions; skills that are incredibly valuable and important for the advanced language student. |
