| 概要 | This study examines how investors differentiate between firms’ internal and external CSR efforts. We propose four CSR strategies: forerunners (strong in both CSR dimensions), laggards (weak in both), walkers (strong internal, weak external), and talkers (strong external, weak internal). Two questions guide the study: whether investors equally reward marginal CSR improvements by forerunners and laggards, and whether walkers outperform talkers. Using polynomial regression and 3D response-surface analysis on 38,056 firm-year observations (2010–2019), we find that investors reward forerunners’ additional CSR efforts more strongly than those of laggards, reflecting skepticism toward laggards. We also find that firms with moderate CSR gain more from strengthening internal rather than external CSR, meaning walkers outperform talkers. The study shows that excelling in both CSR dimensions matters, with internal CSR having greater weight, contributing to stakeholder theory and CSR research. |
