概要 Presented by the Language Learning Center at Kyoto Notre Dame University. This presentation focused the crucial role pronunciation has in communication. But why teach pronunciation? Probably one of the main reasons is that English is not pronounced as it is written with both vowels and consonants often being pronounced in different ways, plus there are no accents to help learners with stress. In addition, simple imitation isn’t enough for many learners (non-native speakers) to overcome the speech patterns of their native/first language (L1). Also, incorrect pronunciation is one of the main reasons for breakdowns in communication and because pronunciation is a feature of speech, and spelling a feature of writing, spelling will often have an influence on the learning of pronunciation as the majority of learners use written texts in their studies. Thus, this relationship is often complex and chaotic as a single written letter might have a number of different pronunciations in different words, a single sound might be represented by a number of letters or letter combinations in different words, and written letters may not have a directly corresponding pronunciation. Thus, the purpose of this presentation was to show that teaching intelligible (rather than native-like) pronunciation via ‘explicit phonetic instruction’ is a ‘key’ factor for when our students start learning English phonemes.
