概要 Initial Experiences with the M-Reader Quiz System”. In this presentation the presenters described their initial efforts to establish the use of the M-Reader quiz system as part of an extensive reading program for first- and second-year English majors at a small private university in Japan. M-Reader (a simplified version of MoodleReader that is meant to be easier for everyone to use) is a website that allows teachers to check whether students have read their assigned books and keep track of the number of words students have read. This is done via easy 10-item quizzes that students can take on any computer with an Internet connection. The presenters provided a report on the progress of the project after one semester based on student surveys, teacher feedback, and observations of the students’ use of the M-Reader site itself. In the surveys, students were asked how much the M-Reader system gave them motivation to read, whether they preferred taking quizzes to writing reports as evidence of having read a book, and if they encountered any difficulties with using the online system, among other questions. Teachers were asked to report on any troubles they or their students experienced with the system, and they were asked to provide feedback on the most appropriate M-Reader settings for their students (e.g. student levels, word count goals, and time delay between quizzes). The feedback from teachers about the settings and other issues are crucial for determining the future direction of the extensive reading program with M-Reader at our university.
