概要 This presentation will report on the use of an adapted version of the Classroom Oral Participation Scheme (COPS) developed by King (2013), to examine ongoing silent behaviour of an individual student. COPS was used to conduct structured observations of a first-year intermediate EFL speaking and listening class in a Japanese university, examining the behaviour of an individual student. The student’s behaviour had raised concerns from several teachers, and my attempts to interact with him had not been effective. I used the empirical data from the adapted COPS to help frame my interview questions to reduce my bias and assumptions towards his behaviour. Data was collected for verbal and non-verbal participation in 60-second intervals using the tallying structured observation format of COPS. The results highlight the multiple forms and functions of silence in the EFL classroom, and the importance of not assuming that silent behaviour is meaningless or nonfacilitative for learning.
