Details | One of the most-frequently voiced concerns of learners relates to their progress - or perceived lack of it - in the acquisition of vocabulary. This presentation considers what it means to know a word, what words we should teach - including the importance of chunks and collocations - and just when these things should be taught. The amount of review and revision necessary to fully remember and be able to use a word productively is also discussed. Additionally, the presentation will look at how to motivate students so they get excited about acquiring new words, and some practical, low-tech ways to review vocabulary will be introduced. These techniques also encourage autonomy in the learners, letting them prioritize what words they feel are useful for them. The speaker will conclude with the results of these techniques in their classroom. Teachers are welcome to share their own tips as well. |
