概要 This paper focuses on the relationship between flow experience and group work in EFL classroom. The purpose of the present study is twofold: (1) to investigate whether flow occurs while working on a balanced task, and (2) to find out where is the most appropriate balance between challenge and skills for students to experience flow. 33 university students were divided into eleven groups and each group completed 4 tasks with different levels of difficulty within the time limit. Flow was measured with Short Flow State Scale developed by Jackson, Martin, & Eklund (2008). n addition, we tested the potential utility of inter-personal synchrony of brain activities measured by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) as a quantitative measurement for the flow. Findings from both of the quantitative and subjective measurements (1) suggest that the participants do experience flow regardless of the task difficulty by working together, (2) demonstrate the great potential of synchrony as a quantitative measurement of flow, and (3) show that the Flow Theory can offer a useful framework for conceptualizing and evaluating EFL activities.
