概要 Teaching practice is a part of teacher-training courses and it is usually carried out in the last stage of pre-service teacher training courses during the third or fourth-year of university curricula in Japan. Although one of the purposes of teaching practice is for student-teachers to better understand their capability and aptitude as teachers, it is questionable for them to be able to reach a full understanding of themselves as teachers because the period of teaching practice is too short: only three or four weeks. After they graduate from their universities, they are able to obtain a teacher’s certificate without another internship as do students in Taiwan.
The main purpose of this research is to examine quantitatively and qualitatively how student-teachers’ consciousness and attitudes change before and after teaching practice in the field of English language teaching, and to ascertain whether or not they can retain these positive changes. The result shows that after finishing the teaching practice, a lot of participants’ desire to be a teacher becomes stronger right after the teaching practice, whereas their belief and motivation tends to decrease after a couple of months. Finally, the discussion is concluded with some suggestions for future teaching practice in Japan.
