概要 The purpose of this study is to identify differences in attitude and motivation towards the English language amongst learners participating in intensive English language programs in two different contexts: (1) an ENL context, in countries where English is spoken mainly as a native language, such as the UK, Canada, and Australia; and (2) an ESL context, in countries where English is spoken mainly as a second language, like Malaysia.
A 5-point Likert scale questionnaire measuring learner attitude and motivation was conducted with 64 participants before and after the program. Subsequently, two-way ANOVA was performed to analyze the data. Results showed there was no statistically significant difference amongst participants concerning emotional aspects, such as their interests, anxiety and tedium levels, and pleasure in learning.
However, it was found that, prior to their experience, those who plan study in an ESL context have less interest in maintaining their pride and self-esteem and less motivation to consider English as a tool to earn professional benefits in the future.
