Details | Whilst researching songs related to whaling in Japan I have noted a number of different interpretations of the concept of 'whaling community', from both within and outside Japan. While some of these nest comfortably as simple matters of scale, others appear inconsistent or even to conflict. Taking these findings as geographical, historical, social and political positions on 'belonging', and indeed on 'not belonging', I present a number of examples from my research so far, and discuss ideas arising from them, of what might constitute a 'whaling community' in local, national and international arenas. |
