Details A MALL learning module was developed for use in conjunction with an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course for first-year university students. A Nintendo DS mobile device and its software called ‘DS More Training for the TOEIC Listening and Reading Tests’ were used to deliver a learning module. The success of MALL may depend on whether students can engage in self-regulated learning (SRL), a type of self-study in which students take responsibility for making, carrying out and evaluating strategic learning plans. It was concluded that the Nintendo DS mobile device and the learning module fostered self-study practices in terms of time spent on learning tasks, levels of satisfaction derived from the tasks, and self-measured achievement. SRL, in terms of the specificity of the goals, the customized creation of learning tasks and its in-class application, was a prominent feature of the self-study which occurred with students in MALL courses.
