Details	Starting from Tanizaki Junichirô’s novel Quicksand　(卍), we compare its five adaptations to cinema to date analyzing the variations in the plot depending on the genre, the time when the film is made and the different readings of Tanizaki’s novel by each director. The different cinematic narrative frameworks and Mitsuko’s characterization as a Westernized femme fatale, as a demonic being or as a sadistic teenager will guide the commentary.
