Details Traditionally, in university majors in Hispanic Philology and similar in Spanish-speaking countries, literature has played a crucial role from the point of view of the content. Is that the case in Japan too? Is their relative importance in curricula increasing, or perhaps decreasing? Through surveys and interviews with native and Japanese teachers of courses in Spanish and Latin American literature, plus analysis of their syllabus, I will try to give an overview of the current state of teaching these subjects in Japanese universities and respond to the following questions: What is taught? How is it taught? How much is taught? I also propose to open a double debate; firstly, both about the benefits of literature in Spanish for the Japanese student and about the challenges and difficulties we as teachers face; and secondly, to reflect on whether literature should exist exclusively aimed at the ultimate objective of mastering the language, or if it should exist per se as its own and independent subject, as necessary knowledge of our countries’ Culture (with capital letters): Why do we teach literature?
