Details During the 2023/2024 academic year, we have carried out an extensive reading program in the Spanish Department of a Japanese foreign studies university. The study has been extended to 6 classes from first to fourth year, covering a total of approximately 100 students. Following the 10 founding principles of Day and Bamford (2002), which emphasize the quantitative and playful aspect of a prolonged, simple and fast reading – compared to the short texts with a certain level of difficulty offered by intensive reading –, we have provided the students with weekly or biweekly graded readers, illustrated books for children and comics for young people, among others. After reading the texts outside the classroom, the students interpreted and evaluated them in writing and then discussed them in class in pairs. At the end of the course, in order to evaluate the program, we have applied a questionnaire based on Yamashita (2017) to confirm that positive changes have occurred in the students' attitude towards reading, as well as in their reading habits.
