Details This paper presents the process of creating the syllabus for an optional semester-long course on Music in Spanish for 2nd and 3rd year students majoring in Spanish at a Japanese university of foreign studies. To achieve this, a balance has been sought between: 1) introducing students to the recent history of Spanish and Latin American popular music by choosing a variety of genres and artists; 2) teaching Spanish and cultural elements from the lyrics of the chosen songs; and 3) encouraging the active and creative participation of the attendees. A theoretical framework on the use of music in the ELE classroom will be briefly presented, followed by the organization of the classes, criteria for choosing artists and songs, and specific activities for working with written and audiovisual materials, which include the interpretation of music in the classroom and the creation of songs by the students themselves.
