| Details | Musical novels incorporate content related to musical works and processes that evoke the characteristics of the musical medium, often metaphorically. The Razumovski Mystery, a novel written by journalist and music critic Martín Llade in 2024, uses the classic detective or mystery genre and the character of Ludwig van Beethoven as the main detective to incorporate various elements from the real Beethoven's musical works, while also presenting a fictionalized account of the post-Napoleonic Congress of Vienna. Drawing on intermediality theories applied to the relationship between literature and music by Wolf (1999), Rajewski (2005), and Peterman (2014), I propose to analyze Llade's novel, showing how Beethoven's music manifests itself in the text. After that, I will be able to conclude whether The Razumowski Mystery consists of a musical novel stricto sensu, which requires an imitation of the musical medium by the written medium, or whether, on the contrary, the inclusion of Beethoven and the mentions of his works in it only imply a thematization of a content that transcends the characteristics of one or the other medium. |
