Details | This paper reports on the creation and use of vocabulary databases from United Nations documents to support the vocabulary learning and reading skill development of students who major in International Studies at a university in Japan. The databases are being used to create mobile assisted language learning (MALL) word lists for International Studies courses and five-step learning modules to be used on mobile devices such as cell phones and tablet PCs. The words on the lists consist of technical and other low frequency words, selected by frequency and range analysis as well as by applying teachers’ intuition about word usefulness. Students are provided with information about, and training in the use of, MALL blended-learning strategies to deal with these types of words when they meet them in texts. |
