Details | Fostering meaningful engagement between learners and communities outside the classroom should be an
integral part of education for a sustainable future. Also essential is understanding social media and how to use it to bring people and ideas together. In this session, the presenter will share an elective course conducted in 2022 that had university students in Japan identify a community need connected to their personal or academic interests and use social media to fill that need through promotion, connection, and sharing. This necessitated getting out of the classroom and into the local community with their smartphones and cameras to research the topic in the field, conduct interviews, document their findings, and share them on Instagram and the simple websites they created. Along the way, they learned social media promotional techniques, the basics of web publishing - including copyright and ethics - and the importance and challenges of connecting their learning with the issues and needs of relevant communities, either local or abroad. After presenting the structure and outcomes of the course, the presenter will leave ample time to discuss ways of using tools like Instagram to encourage students to engage with the world outside of the classroom. |
