Details	With emphasis on issues of translation and potential bias of sources, this paper presents my whaling song research to date, tailored to an association of Asia researchers and Japanologists. “What can Japanese folk songs (民謡 min'yō) tell us about whaling in the Edo period? We will listen to some of the songs and allow their lyrics to illuminate the communities of the time, their working methods, and attitudes to nature in general and whales in particular.”
